Besides being a Founding Father, John Adams was a dreamer; a quote: “Suppose a nation in some distant region should take the Bible for their only law book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited! Every member would be obliged in conscience, to temperance, frugality, and industry; to justice, kindness, and charity towards his fellow men; and to piety, love and reverence toward Almighty God….What a Utopia, what a Paradise would this region be.” John Adams (1735-1826), the Second President of the United States and First Vice-President, a Signer of The Declaration of Independence. (Tom’s Note: Can you just imagine what this would mean for our country and our society? The Peace, the Joy, the Contentment! Look for more on The Bible in the next post.)

Everyone is urged to join a prayer group at your local church or anywhere you can get a small (or larger) group together to pray for our country. Evil is wrecking havoc; on our country and our people. God has promised to hear us, forgive us our sins and heal our land if we will humble ourselves (before Him), and Pray and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14). God will hear us. The government is not the answer – gun control is not the answer – mental health treatment, while perhaps needed, will not end the wickedness. This is a classic struggle between Good and Evil; putting our faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to defeat Evil.
As promised, here is the quote from Martin Luther:
“I am much afraid that schools will prove to be the great gates of hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which men are not increasingly occupied with the Word of God must become corrupt.”
Martin Luther (1483-1546), German professor of theology, composer, priest, monk and a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation
Our Society is disintegrating. A straight line can be drawn from this disintegration to the 1962 U. S. Supreme Court Decision “Engel v. Vitale,” in which prayer in public schools was ruled unconstitutional. (Please see the next blog/post for a quote from Martin Luther.)
The other day, I saw a rainbow, both the beginning and end, and, a very special treat; a second rainbow, running parallel with the first. The two rainbows were separated by some distance, but I could only see one end of the second rainbow. I think rainbows are a gorgeous gift from God and when I seen one, I always think of the first rainbow, documented in Genesis 9: 12-17. It was a sign of the everlasting covenant which God made with man, to never again allow the waters to become a flood to destroy all flesh. It must have been a heart warming sight to Noah and his family!
My last post ended with ‘everything is temporary – save one thing.’ That one thing is you and I and every other human being on earth who has ever been conceived or will be conceived. Sure enough, your body is temporary, but your soul will live on into eternity – forever! Where will your soul dwell in eternity? This is where it gets a bit dicey! You have two choices; every human being has to make a choice. You can choose to spend eternity in Heaven, with Jesus, or in Hell, with Satan. See the Gospel of Matthew 7:13-14 for Jesus’ words comparing the density of the latter to the former (Here’s a hint: There are many who go in by the wide gate and few who go in by the narrow gate).
My wife and I recently traveled to Galveston, TX to work with the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief organization in response to Hurricane Harvey. We spent a week in Texas and primarily helped with ‘mud-outs.’ One particular image is seared into my brain and heart: one evening, while returning to the Galveston First Baptist Church, we were on the highway, on an overpass, and I was able to get a good look at one particular street – and on both sides of the street, as far as I could see, were large mounds of trash piled up. Imagine everything you own, piled on the curb, waiting to be picked up and taken to the land-fill. It reminded me of how temporary everything in life is. Everything is temporary – save one thing. We will cover that next time.
We are going to a wedding this evening. Our daughter-in-law’s sister is getting married. Weddings always make me think of ‘The Marriage Triangle,’ (you can Google that, if you’d like). When I picture ‘The Marriage Triangle.’ I imagine the husband and wife on opposite ends of the horizontal plane with Jesus at the apex of the triangle where the vertical planes meet; with the inscription “The closer a husband and wife get to Jesus, the closer they get to each other!” This is the truth. In my experience, marriage without God’s help and guidance is going to be akin to crossing the ocean in a rowboat – possible, but exceedingly difficult.
